CBE FAQs

Home » About Us

Here are some frequently asked questions about Congregation Beth Elohim. If your question is not answered here, or if you would like to speak with someone at CBE, please contact Interim Executive Director Monika Hamburger at (718) 768-3814, ext. 204, or mhamburger@cbebk.org.

When is the office open?
CBE’s main office is open Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Friday 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

What methods of payment does CBE accept?
We accept payment for dues, programs, events and other fees in cash, checks and credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express).

Does CBE expect adult congregants to wear a kippah during services?
We are an open, inclusive community. Participants in CBE services have a broad spectrum of Jewish beliefs and practices and may make personal choices as whether to wear a kippah or other ritual garments such a talit/prayer shawl.

What is the dress code/appropriate attire for services at CBE?
In general, CBE fosters a comfortable atmosphere, but asks that you dress respectfully for services.

To what extent is Hebrew incorporated in prayer services?
CBE has a robust offering of services for adults, families and children. As the ancient, sacred and universal language of the Jewish people, Hebrew is an important part of all our services. Translation is always available for those who do not read Hebrew. CBE uses Mishkan Tefila, the URJ (Union for Reform Judaism) prayer book, which includes transliterations of all its prayers. If you are interested in learning to read Hebrew, it’s never too late!

Will a non-Jewish spouse or relative feel welcome and comfortable at CBE?
Yes! CBE is committed to welcoming those families who have made the decision to raise their children as Jews. Non-Jewish spouses and partners have always been essential to that process. In addition, we value the questions and concerns non-Jews have about Jewish life and are committed to helping provide points of learning and engagement every step of the way!

How can I volunteer at CBE?
CBE is comprised of a community of its members working in sacred partnership with the clergy and our professional staff. Opportunities for engagement through volunteering are numerous! Click here for more information.

Do you need to be a CBE member to have your child attend Yachad?
Yes.

When will my child receive his or her Bar/Bat Mitzvah date?
During the first semester of your child’s fourth-grade year.

Charitable giving is an important part of Judaism and is vital to our congregation. We depend on your act of generosity and kindness - of Tzedakah - to support our programs and facilities and help us meet the needs of our growing and diverse synagogue community.
