CBE HistorySharing the history of Congregation Beth Elohim (CBE) means the telling of many stories. The story of this community is also intertwined with the neighborhood history and the larger narrative of the city of Brooklyn. The history of CBE is one strand of the history of American Jews and their place in American history as a whole. And the story of Congregation Beth Elohim touches upon many other themes. This is the story of how one small group of immigrants became full-fledged American citizens. This is a story of how Old World religious and cultural traditions were preserved and adapted for a new life in the New World. This is the story of how one Jewish community fits into the larger contours of Jewish history and how American Jews contributed to their nation. And it is the story of a community and its members confronting challenge, growing, and surviving adversity; and their collective renewal and revitalization.
